Spirometer (PFT)
Spirometer (PFT)
Measures how much air you breathe in and out, and how fast, to check lung function.
What it measures
A spirometer is the main tool for pulmonary function testing (PFT). It measures how much air you can breathe in and out, and how quickly you can blow it out.
How the test works
You breathe through a mouthpiece connected to the spirometer, following simple instructions from our staff, including taking a deep breath and blowing out as hard and fast as you can. The test may be repeated after an inhaled medication to compare results.
How results help
Spirometry helps diagnose and monitor conditions such as asthma and COPD, check ongoing shortness of breath or cough, and see how well treatment is working.
