12-lead EKG machine

12-lead EKG machine

12-lead EKG machine

Records your heart's electrical activity from 12 angles.

What an EKG shows

An electrocardiogram (EKG) records the electrical activity of your heart. A 12-lead EKG looks at that activity from 12 different angles, giving your provider a detailed picture of heart rhythm and function.

How the test works

Small sticky electrodes are placed on your chest, arms and legs, and you lie still while the machine records. Nothing is sent into your body.

Why it is part of your care

EKGs can help check for irregular heart rhythms, signs of past heart strain and other changes. They are often part of a new-patient workup or a routine physical, and they help when you have symptoms such as chest discomfort, palpitations or shortness of breath.
