EMG
EMG
An EMG, or electromyography, is a test that assesses your nerves and the muscles they control. At PRN MEDICAL in Brooklyn, EMG testing helps us understand symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness or pain in the arms and legs.
What an EMG measures
Nerves send electrical signals that make muscles work. An EMG records that electrical activity, at rest and when the muscle contracts, so a clinician can see whether nerves and muscles are communicating normally.
Why it may be ordered
- Numbness or tingling — for example in the hands, as with carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Muscle weakness or cramping — to look for a nerve or muscle cause.
- Pain that travels — such as pain running down an arm or leg from a pinched nerve.
What to expect
Small sensors are placed on the skin over the muscles being tested, and you may be asked to relax and then tighten the muscle. Your clinician will explain each step and go over the results with you.
